I feel it can be hard to know all of the time whether or not God is changing your heart or if we are changing our mind.
It took me quite a while to grasp this concept that God could change our own desires of our heart; and I still don’t have it all figured out. But that’s okay, because I’m totally comfortable with God knowing everything and not me. I was honestly confused. How could God change what I wanted? How could He change my desires?
I think there are a few questions you can ask yourself to help you figure out if God is changing your heart’s desires.
1) Is It God-Honoring?
Does your desire bring glory to God or does it attract attention to yourself?
We should want our lives to bring glory and praise to Him alone. If a new change does not do so, it likely isn’t God changing your desire.
2) Have you been seeking God’s wisdom?
If you have been reading His Word and asking Him for wisdom, it may be God who had been changing your desires. The more you fill yourself up with His Word and surround yourself with God-honoring people the more definite it will be that God is speaking clearer into your life.
3) Are you willing to let God into your decision making?
If not, be open to change.
God’s plan IS the best plan. You don’t want to miss it! Open your heart to God and let Him lead the way. Be careful to only let Him into your heart and be mindful of who you surround yourself with.
4) Are you surrounded by strong Christ followers who are God-honoring within their daily life, their actions, and words?
As cliche as it sounds it is absolutely true, you are who you surround yourself with. I think many people do not realize the effect of this statement. People can either inspire you, or tear you down. Choose wisely, be patent, and know it is okay to be picky.
I was stubborn and close-minded to what God had planned for me. When I finally took a second to be open to what God’s plan might be for me, within the next few minutes I kid you not my original thought was completely changed. I now desired to switch dorm buildings on my college campus for next year and accept a new leadership position for the upcoming year. A building I never thought I would move into, and if you would have told me a few months earlier that I would be switching over and become a resident life leader I would have laughed and likely said, “yeah right”. God is now telling me back, “right”. Honestly, now I could not be more excited to pursue these new changes in my life which God has rooted these desires in my heart.
