Why I Don’t Say O.M.G.

Why I Don’t Say O.M.G.

You can call me old fashioned, but I call it respectful and classy.

I don’t use the term “O.M.G.” out of respect and honor to my Father, Jesus Christ.

I believe if you truly respect someone you will not use their name in a careless way. Throwing it about as slang that could be used in all sorts of situations. I believe God is sacred. Therefore, His Name is not meant to be treated carelessly.

I know some people would believe I am over thinking this or being super picky on this topic, but that’s just it, our one and only Savior, God who we call Father, Creator of the entire universe is not something to take lightly. I believe this world has made God seem so casual now-a-days. To be honest, this is because we all live in a sinful world, where the devil likes us to take God’s name and make it so easy and simple to use in such a casual way. Well that’s just it; God’s name is NOT meant to be taken lightly. We should treat Him and His name with the utmost respect from the bottom of our hearts.

Now don’t get me wrong, I feel it too, that casual sense of just quickly typing out those three little letters to get to my point and move on. I’ve been there, and many times a matter a fact. I would think to myself, “ugh…it doesn’t really matter that much. After all, my friends will know what I mean, and they won’t take it literally”. However, this isn’t about my friends and what they will think or decipher out of it. This is about me making my own decision to stick with my word and doing so by honoring God who made me. Plus, this type of “doesn’t really matter” perspective is exactly what the devil wants me to think. So what do I do instead of using that phrase? Well, I’ve become accustomed to write “oh my goodness”, or switch up my choice of words entirely. I mean is writing up different words that much more of a hassle? No, matter of fact, it’s quite easy actually. Just try it for yourself.

The point of me writing this blog post is not to try and convince anyone to change their way of writing and speaking. It’s rather to have you take a second to look at what/who you say you respect in your life and how you go about treating it. For me personally, that is God, who I hold most high and above all else in my life. Therefore, I choose to no longer use His Name in a light or easy way. His Name is meant to be honored and respected and that is exactly what I will do.

Woah this is all so true. There is so many things we say or do that society looks at as casual but in the eyes of God it is dishonoring. I am so guilty of this ? thanks so much for this post girl, very convicting!

This is so deep! Thanks for the reminder to not be so casual in our speech but to actually remember that simple things like taking God’s name in vain still hurts him.

Thanks for this post. I have also felt at times like man, it’s not a big deal, but then when I’ve thought about it I’ve always come to the same conclusion as you. I don’t want to take his name in vain, even by using an acronym.

Jasmine I find your blog through the community via FB “The Mountainside Gathering” and your title of this post intrigued me!! I totally agree with you!!! It’s something that I hear all the time at college and in society in general, but it still doesn’t mean we as Christians have to par take in such language. Loved hearing your thoughts and thank you for sharing!! 🙂

It’s so important to decide what we will and will not do based on our faith, not on what society says! <3

Thank you so much for writing this! I am actually the exact same way. It has always bothered me hearing that phrase, and I’ve tried using different expressions over the years. It takes a lot of strength to stand strong in what you believe in!
