Why I Prefer the term “Style” Over “Fashion”

You may be thinking, “What is the difference?”, “Don’t they mean the same thing?”, or “Does it really matter?”

We’ll in my mind it does, in a non-serious way. I want to reveal the difference and share with you why I believe the importance of these two words isn’t actually the words themselves; it is what makes them different that is key.

First, let’s start with the word “Fashion”.

DEFINE:  fash·ion

noun:  A popular trend, especially in styles of dress and ornament or manners of behavior.

“his hair is cut in the latest fashion”

synonyms:  vogue, trend, craze, rage, mania, fad.

Growing up I probably would have chosen the term “fashion” over “style” any day, simply because it was “in”(and always will be). But that’s just it- Fashion is a trend. A fad now, but fades into the past, which we now refer to as the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s (you know the hippie Era, or as I like to think of as the Brady Bunch days). Fashion rules the world – on the runways and across the globe. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, using it as an inspiration is GREAT! However, anyone can pick up a magazine, read the designers tips, go to the mall, buy it, & wear it (that is, if you have the cha-ching).

Now on to “Style”.

The way I view style is – one’s own way of putting something together. To make it their own & be unique.

DEFINE:  style

noun:  A manner of doing something.

“different styles of management”

synonyms: manner, way, technique, method.

Did you notice the word different is used in the definition? You create your own style. There’s no right or wrong, because you get to decide it for yourself. Your style is what sets you apart from everyone else. Your style makes you who you are and says something special about you. One’s style conveys a message to everyone around you. It could be about your personality or what you like and stand for.

Style can be the way you tuck-in your oversized shirt or how you layer your necklaces. It can be the way you do your hair or match your sandals to your skirt. It’s how you do your nails, pack your purse, or even walk in the grocery store while looking for your favorite late night snack. That’s why it’s called a lifestyle. Style doesn’t just take place in the magazines, it’s part of EVERYTHING YOU DO. The best part is YOU get to mold it to who you are.

So why I prefer the term style over fashion? Anyone can have a style and it’s unique to each and every amazing person out there!

It’s about finding yourself. Growing your inner and outer confidence. Expressing yourself in a creative way.

This is one of the many reasons why I decided to create this lifestyle blog. I want to help you, and ladies of all ages, to find your individual style and encourage you all to believe in yourself every day! I know life can bring some crazy & unexpected challenges, so I want to be there to share my tips and experiences with you all, and to hopefully make your day a little bit brighter!
